Welcome to the field of corrosion

Friends,
I welcome you to my new blog on corrosion of materials. Corrosion is a natural phenomenon whereby materials deteriorate through interaction with their surroundings. This process is of much practical importance as it leads to rusting of our automobiles, bridges and buildings as well as disastrous failures of airplanes, ships, atomic power plants or gas storage tanks. It is estimated that in an industrial society the annual loss due to corrosion amounts to 3 to 5 % of its GDP. Much of this loss could be avoided by appropriate material selection and maintenance. I plan to write about the basic principles of corrosion, characteristics of various forms of corrosion and methods of corrosion prevention.

Is there yet an explanation for the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in steel?
